Market Your Mission Not Your Margin

   With tax-exempt challenges rising and class action suits being brought
   with regards to indigent care charges, hospitals have little  “insurance”
   when it comes to showing their true value in the community. In fact,
   most marketing is done around high “profit” centers, which sends a
   certain message. Of course we know that without margin there can be
   no mission. However, don’t be caught uninsured.

Consider the repercussions. In a recent study, the aggregate value
   of the tax exemption from income taxes for all non profits during a
   one year period was $4.6 billion; the median hospital receiving
   benefits of 1.8 percent of  total assets. For the property tax exemption,
   an aggregate value of $1.7 billion was determined.
 
   This past summer, the Senate Finance Committee was considering a
 
   proposal where the tax-exempt status of hospitals and other organizations
   would be reviewed every five years.
